How to add discounts to your newsletters

Adding discounts to your newsletter is a great way to attract purchases from your newsletter. It also is an ideal way of tracking how many sales you generate via newsletters.

This article covers the different ways you can integrate discounts into your newsletters. Once you implement this guide, users will be able to click on a link/banner on your newsletter and automatically apply it.

Prerequisites

1. Create a discount in Shopify

Before getting started with this guide, you will need to create a discount code. To do this, log into your Shopify admin, navigate to the discount section and create a discount. A few suggestions based on other customers experiences:

  • It's always a good idea to create a new discount code specifically for newsletters. The main benefit is this will let you track how many sales are getting generated for the discount.
  • For your first few newsletters you send, we recommend setting a very attractive discount offer (eg. 75% off) will help you drive up engagement/link, shares of your newsletter and get your store more, customers.

2. Get a sharable link to use in newsletter

Once you have a discount setup, in the Shopify admin, click to view the discount. Under the discount title, click Promote dropdown and Get a sharable link

Once the link pops up, click Copy link. This link will be needed for later on when applying to the newsletter

You're now ready to add the discount to your newsletter. This next section will take you through adding it in three ways.

(a) Add discount to the banner message

The banner is one of the very first sections in your newsletter. The purpose of this section is to allow you to add custom messages every month when you send your newsletter. This makes it a perfect section to add a link to a discount. Here's how you do it.

When you are on the main editor screen editing a campaign in the app, on the right-hand side you should see Banner Title and Banner Message (note: if you don't see these, it may be because the Newsletter Banner section is removed. Go to the layout tab and if it does not exist, you can add it back in).

We are going to add a discount link into the Banner Message section. Add a message about your discount and select the value you want to turn into a link for the discount.

Next, click the link icon above the text field. You should see a box appear. In this box enter the discount link you copied in the prerequisite steps.

Scroll to the bottom of the content panel and click the Save button. The preview should now show the link in the banner message (as per the screenshot below).

(b) Add discount to a Text Banner

Image with Text overlay section, lets you add custom messages easily that includes a button to apply the discount.

First, we need to add the section to our newsletter. Under the layout tab, click on the Add new section button.

Under Content, add the Image with Text Overlay section to the template.

Once added, close the modal and click on the section on the left-hand side to open up its settings.

Update the settings to match your discount message and add the discount link (copied earlier in the prerequisite section) to the field titled Button Url).

Once you save this, you should see the preview update with a new discount section.

(c) Add discount to an image banner

This section gives you the flexibility to design an image to better fit your brand but include the discount link when the banner is clicked.

First, we need to add the section to our newsletter. Under the layout tab, click on the Add new section button.

Under Content, add the Image Banner section to the template.

Once added, close the modal and click on the section on the left-hand side to open up its settings.

In the settings field, upload an image and set the Link Url to match the sharable discount link you copied in the prerequisite section of this guide.

Once you sent out your newsletter, as your customers click the banner, the discount will automatically apply and show up in the order step. Enjoy.
